Happy Birthday Karl Castro! Share ko lang tong article na to, total birthday naman ni Karl. Hehehe. LINGERLeon, Philippine High School for the ArtsI believe all people have distinct smells. Not unlike a way for making their territory, I think all humans possess a certain odor that distinguishes one from the other. A mother may leave a scent of baking cookies trailing behind her. A hyperactive cousin may smell like caked mud. A total stranger can reek of cheap cologne. Yet, all these scents can be distinguished and even categorized. I can point out that what I smell from the person beside me is of jasmine, or the person across from me of a dead rat. There is, of course, always an exception to the rule, and he is my friend and classmate, KARL CASTRO. When I first met him, he didn’t smell like anything special. He just smelled extra clean, like he washed himself with Safeguard twenty times over each morning. It was natural. Most people smelled just like him, only his soapy scent didn’t fade away in the afternoon. It stayed with him perpetually, which most people would believe is an asset, since everybody wants to smell nice and clean. A few months later, his scent changed from fresh-the-shower to musky. He smelled of a signature cologne only he had. Nobody could put a finger on the exact odor it resembled. It was mystifying, and every time he would pass by, my other friends and I would lift our noses in the air, take delicate whiff, and try to guess what that smell was, to no avail. Up to this day, no matter how hard we tried to breathe in what trailed behind him, nobody could really say what it was. At times, if he drew near, he would reek so strongly that it would give me a proper headache. Many people have come up to him to inquire about this brand of cologne. A dazed look would pass over his face and he would reply that he didn’t use anything on him. Those questioning him would raise an eyebrow and leave puzzled. Karl would just shrug it off and go on with his work, since that question was asked of him every single day. During the later months of last year, at around November or December, his smell was so powerful; I could sense his presence in a large, crowded room just by taking a sniff. People say it was because of his pituitary glands, those that make people sweat. Karl was famous for having what I figured out was a glandular dilemma. He sweated every second of the day. Early during breakfast, while answering an English test, while asking for extra dessert bars, and even during evening meetings, when the air is cool and at times even freezing. He would feel cold, but he knew that he was still dripping. Could his distinct smell be from his sweat? It seemed a pretty disgusting notion, but there was no other way to explain it. So I just contented myself with that answer and went on with my studies, forgetting about the whole mystery for quite some time. The next year, during the fourth quarter, a huge yakisoba instant noodle craze swept through the class, and every single person had a cup in his bag. Karl had three. This was why, for a brief moment in time, he actually smelled of something other than whatever it was. His scent was now a refreshingly different mix of spices, dehydrated meat and noodles, and sesame oil. Everybody else smelled this too, so it wasn’t much of an improvement. In the end, people took Yakisoba every now and then, and Karl gave up on bringing it to school completely. The muskrat was back. This new school year, his scent has improved. It is not that dizzying anymore, and it lessened, but it would still give this enigmatic air that would hang around him. During an interaction in the NAC theater, I sat beside him and out of the blue muttered, “I smell Munchkins and French fries,” under my breath. Karl looked at me as if I was crazy and started to sniff around him. I sniffed too, and realized that the interesting mix of butternut munchkins and McDonald’s fries lingered around him. I had finally given a concretized scent for Karl, to his surprise, for it didn’t seem quite appealing to him to be labeled as smelling of donut holes and deep fried potatoes. I just smiled and teased him, saying that he smelled like a whole food court. Although I was able to say concrete examples for what Karl’s odor resembled, I am still skeptical. At times, it would change from fresh donuts to staler ones, or it would suddenly resemble light cologne. Everyone wants a certain characteristic that would give an air mystery to him or her. Karl couldn’t get rid of it even if he tried.
